Interview for PGCE/need some assistance

User Image
I have an interview for Roehampton University in a few weeks. I have been told that one of the questions on the written examination is to write about my knowledge of a music lesson in school. I would be grateful if someone could give me a few ideas of what would be a good music lesson to write about? I am from the Republic of Ireland so I am still trying to familiarize myself with the UK curriculum.

Good luck with your interview day. I am currently studying a Secondary Music PGCE at the University of Cumbria. It's a very busy and exciting time, and I can assure you that the University will be looking for a range of things beyond your written answer. If I were you I would focus on what you have seen in schools either through any experience you have in observing at your chosen level or anything you remember from your own schooling. The University should not be too worried whether the music lesson you refer to is Irish or UK curriculum, as long as you flag up the right issues. Think about resources that were available to pupils, how did the teacher engage pupils? what activities formed the lesson? was it all performance based or all theory based? was there a listening activity? was there any poor behaviour and if so how was it managed? were pupils excited and keen to get onto task or were they disinterested and in need of motivation? All of these things can help you form a good answer, but a brilliant one will be one that comes from you as a real person (ie not yet a teacher) and how you talk about what you observed/experienced. If you can talk about everything in a critical way leaning towards the positive, I would have thought that you would be alright. I think the purpose of these written questions at interview is to check that you can write to degree level, so think carefully about your words and structure of your writing.

Hope this helps, feel free to drop me a line if you have any other questions, and i'll help as best I can!

Good luck!

Hi Minny

Since this is a question about YOUR knowledge of a music lesson, surely this is a question only you can answer. i.e. only you know what your knowledge is in this context. It might be helpful to think back to your own music lessons when you were at school - what were the good and bad features. I think what the university are after here is to give you an opportunity to share some of your own musical background and opinions.

You do not say whether you are going into primary or secondary teaching. If it's the former, have a look at this month's (January) editorial by Lis McCullough on the Market Place page - some great background to primary teaching - and more!

Do you mean write about pedagogy or will it be to plan/outline a lesson?

Probably best to start here:
http://curriculum.qcda.gov.uk/key-stages-3-and-4/subjects/music/index.aspx
And have a look through other links on the page (especially the bottom right 'Planning and Assessment')
You could look through Ofsted's criteria and Musical Futures (links to MF/MuFu on this site).

They might be looking for your approach to teaching music as well as checking what you already know. It's hard to speculate.... there are some ITT leaders on here I think, probably give a much more useful answer!
Good luck :)
