Talented singer: what do I do?

User Image
I have a talented singer in year 12 - one of the best I have heard in years. She sings and plays piano - think Nora Jones and you'll have the idea. I am looking for some way to nurture this talent and to give her some opporunities wider than just locally. Can anybody recommend anything I can recommend to her that would suit this style?

Hi Anthony

I suggest you keep your support in the education arena - it's a jungle out there!

My first suggestion would be to look for some high profile performance opportunities - maybe linking in to www.dcsf.gov.uk/tunein ? Or a showcase at regional/national education conferences..... Perhaps talk to colleagues at NAME or FMS.

Also the opportunity to perform with some really good jazz ensembles - regionally or nationally. Try talking to Bill Martin on this site. He is bound to have all the contacts.

Thanks Liz - lots of my students gig there. I think I need to give lots of opportunities for performance. We're doing a live lounge at college soon in the 6th form area. Should be good! Any more contributions would be gratefully received. . .

Have you tried The Shed? Probably, but here's the weblink anyway:

Does she write her own material too? If not, there are lots of opportunities for developing her skills into composition, obviously. I think you're right to look to broaden her style. And keep her away from so-called Talent competitions!
