Teaching grade 7 aural

User Image
I have had a request for tuition from an older lady who did badly in the aural of her grade 7 piano exam and would like to improve ready for her grade 7 violin exam. I'm not sure yet where her problems lie but my guess is that the cadences and working out chord progressions will be stumbling blocks. I'd be grateful for any ideas for helping her - it's not quite the same as teaching aural to children alongside composition and theory in school.

Although she doesn't need to know the theory for the exam, looking at written examples together might help her to understand cadences etc more clearly. For a lot of people, the visual description helps them to understand what they are hearing better and gives them the confidence to then try identifying cadences purely by ear.

If she has internet access you can always point her towards http://www.musictheory.net

This won't help with cadences but the aural tests are very useful for chord and interval recognition
