Why schools need to invest in Propellerhead software

As a composer I'm now working pretty heavily in Propellerhead's software 'Record'. Anyone that knows Propellerhead's previous software 'Reason', will know it is a great sequencing and synth/sampler, but you couldn't record audio (real life instruments). Well almost two years ago now, 'Record' was the answer to that problem. After working with it for about a year now, there are simply no limitations to this software. It is a great way for kids to start composing with its 'geeky' interface that's sure to appeal to a wide audience. For any teacher that has a budget, I'd seriously suggest putting it into Record and using Musescore (free) for any notation purposes. I certainly wouldn't invest in Sibelius if it was one or the other. I know this is probably 'foreign territory' to lots of teachers, but the payback in terms of motivated kids, independent learning, music of value really makes it a no-brainer. Have a look at some of the tutorial videos that Propellerhead initiated during the month of May. They also released a Teacher's pack for Reason (about six years ago) which ist still applicable today. Teachers pack is available free on their website now. Some great lesson plans etc of you have the software
You can pick up Reason Adapted very cheaply which was enough for my groups, Record is awesome but a bit ott & expensive for the average school IMHO

Hey Mark,

Just been messing about with Energy XT. For the money (£200 for a classroom of 30 computers / £500 for whole site), it's a steal. Also, just went over to the site you're setting up with resources etc (where do you find the time??????). I think this could be a real solution to a lot of problems. Best of luck with it. My doodlings follow:

And I 'm also in agreement that use of this type of software can play a key role in motivating pupils, so much so that I am currently developing a new resource website specifically for it based on a relative newcomer to the market energyXT.

Very fair licencing for schools and students is already sorted / in place (i.e. by comparison with other apps it's very cheap!) and resources will start appearing during August and throughout the coming year.

The website, if any one wants to have a look at what I'm doing is http://ext-mer.yolasite.com - although this will change once I have bought a proper URL :)

I would welcome any thoughts/comments

I'm with Al on this one.

There is no need for schools to be investing heavily in notation based packages any more. The Teaching Pack for Reason was excellent - and if Propellerhead really want to make an impact on the education market, they should think about updating the Teaching Pack for Record (and figure out some realistic site licensing).

The other main contender for schools is Ableton Live Intro which covers similar territory. At present, I'm working with a group of teachers on using Ableton in the classroom and we expect to share our findings on this site in due course....
