The Government recently consulted on a reform of the copyright system. A summary of the responses can be seen at this document. http://www.ipo.gov.uk/pro-policy/consult/consult-closed/consult-closed-2011/consult-2011-copyright.htm The relevant part for this forum is at page 20 - educational exceptions.

Can I just share with the forum some very good news which is that the "educational" exception to allegations of copyright infringement is indeed to be widened.

I know that, as the NEN so cogently stated when fighting for this, no teacher has time to study all the intricacies of copyright law as it applies in education, but essentially we are going to be brought into the 21st Century.

At the moment, for instance, you can write out an in-copyright musical quote using notation for your class on a chalk blackboard - but not on a whiteboard. I bet you didn't know that - but that's how bonkers the current system is.

I'll report back in in due course unless anyone wants to know more.

Sorry – my misunderstanding. This is indeed a topic worth debating, but perhaps to keep the discussion more ‘self contained’ you might just want to summarise the key points here and add a few key questions to prompt discussion.

This is exactly the approach we have taken with the Ofsted Priorities discussions on the Forum and it seems to work…..

Moderator - I'm sorry if I was unclear - I did intend this as an invitation to open discussion.

I am one of those who submitted that the educational exceptions are far too narrow, along with the NEN whose submission I thought excellent, and I am interested to know what others thought.

Hi

Since this is a news item rather than an invitation to open discussion, would you mind moving it to a blog from your home page?

thanks!
