'Back to back' rhythm notation starter

a game that uses rhythm reading/ notation in pairs, and is differentiated

This is my idea:

Students pick a card of an appropriate difficulty level to them- with a one bar rhythm on it.
They work in pairs, and each student has to say/ sing/ clap the rhythm on their card for their partner to notate. They then swop over.

I have a couple of students in my class who I suspect will find this rather easy- in which case I will ask them to make up theyr own one or two bar rhythms in a time signature chosen by them.

You will find attached 5 A4 sheets each with 4 one bar rhythms in three difficulty levels (1a and 1b are the same difficulty level- just for clarification)

Each difficulty level would be copied unto a different colour card/ paper so that students will know that they can pick a level that is most helpful to them-

You could possibly laminate them and then they need to be cut into four- so that there is a card for each one bar rhythm.

The rhythms here are handdrawn- if you use this idea and make up your own rhythms, could I have a copy, pretty please?

Reflection on Teaching and Learning

This was popular with my students both of year 7 and 9 - more fun than a rhythm dictation from me from the front, and more engaging for the students- it also facilitates differentiation and allows students to practise both reading and writing a rhythm.

Furthermore it gets students reading rhythms individually rather than as a group- without it being too scarey!

Do you think it is relevant for students to learn to read and write rhythms? Why, why not?

If you have a go with this, I'd love to hear how it went!
